AnonAddy (renamed addy.io) is an open-source email aliasing service founded in 2019 with a strong privacy focus. Like SMTPy, it lets you create email aliases on custom domains. This comparison highlights their differences and helps you choose.

Free plan: different philosophies

AnonAddy is especially generous on its free plan: unlimited aliases on its shared domain (@anonaddy.com or @addy.io), ideal for personal use without your own domain. The main limit is bandwidth (10 MB/month of received email).

SMTPy bets on your own domain from the start: 1 custom domain, 10 aliases, 100 emails/month. If you already have a domain and want a professional email identity, SMTPy clearly wins.

Mailbox and interface

AnonAddy is built for pure forwarding: emails are relayed to your primary inbox, with no storage or reading interface. You manage aliases from a dashboard, but you do not read your email inside addy.io.

SMTPy includes a full web mailbox (shared inbox): you can read, search, reply, forward, and archive email directly in the interface — a significant advantage for centralizing your communications.

Data hosting

addy.io is a UK service, also self-hostable (a Laravel install) if you want to run your own server. SMTPy takes the opposite bet: a managed service hosted in France, with no server to administer — your data stays in the EU and your addresses stay on your own domain.

Pricing

AnonAddy is cheaper ($1/month for custom domains). SMTPy costs more but offers more: a built-in mailbox, advanced analytics, webhooks, multi-user teams, and a full API.

When to choose SMTPy

  • You want a full web mailbox on top of forwarding
  • You need detailed analytics (delivery rate, senders, hourly distribution)
  • You manage a team with several users
  • You want to integrate via webhooks and API
  • Data location in France is a priority

When to choose AnonAddy

  • You want the cheapest service on the market
  • You do not need a mailbox interface
  • You want unlimited aliases on a shared domain for free
